Who we are and what we do
Martial Arts are a male preserve. There aren’t many woman coaches around, and it’s mostly men who train in “mixed” gyms. Even today, women -let alone transgender- are seldom to be seen training in Martial Art gyms.

We would like to counterpart this phenomenon by providing a more relaxed atmosphere in our classes where nobody has to prove anything to anyone. All people who identify themselves as women, lesbians, girls, inter- or trans*person are welcome here. Our goal is to support everybody in achieving their own goals, no matter where they come from or where they stand -physically, or otherwise. The participants are taught Muay Thai techniques for faster reaction and coordination. And you don’t have to be an athletic to join!

We place special emphasis on enjoying the sport, the movement and the get-together – of course with a big dash of amicability and fun! We believe that sports are not only there to be fun and to generate more energy, but that sports also contribute to boosting your selfconfidence – which is why we want to create a space for empowerment, self assertion and self-confidence.

All our classes address women – likewise trans women and cis women (the term “cis” means “this side” and characterises people who live a gender identity that matches the sex they were assigned at birth). The classes also address transgender people, i.e. people who do not identify with one or the other of the “given” sexes or feel and / or position themselves “in between”. Classes are open to all intersexuals. Not all classes are open to trans*men. Please check out [Timetable]!
Cis men are generally not accepted in any of the classes.

[Classes]
Please bring a towel and a bottle of water to all classes. You can borrow gloves from the club for the beginning, if you intend to stay on we would like to ask you to bring your own equipment.

Muay Thai / Kickboxing Fitness and Conditioning:
The concept of our Fitness and Conditioning class was developed by Claudia Fingerhut of Lowkick Berlin e.V. It combines fitness training with Thai – and Kickboxing elements.
The class is divided into two parts. The first 45 minutes consist of warming up, power training and stretching, lots of kicking, jumping and boxing …and loud music… Sometimes with a partner, sometimes on your own – and sometimes we start by jumping rope or a game involving lots of movement. You are free to leave after the first half.
The second half is circuit training. The circuit consists of various power endurance, punching and kicking exercises. The circuit is your own responsibility. You can go low or go barking mad.
Conditioning classes are great preparation for technical classes in building up the muscles we need to protect the body from injuries. Also, we boost our condition, coordination and reflexes / speed. If you’re mainly interested in getting fit and you’re looking for an interesting workout, your spot on here too.
No matter what level you’re training at, even if you’re a complete beginner and you just want to find out if Muay Thai / Kickboxing is going to be your thing: Everyone’s welcome at “Condi”-Class.

Muay Thai Technical Class Beginners
There’s always something new to learn in Thaiboxing! It’s a very versatile sport – there are always new aspects of it and ways of approach to it to be discovered. Punches, kicks, knees and elbows, varying your distances to your partner / opponent, speed and action – reaction are only some of the aspects of Muay Thai.
Everyone has to start by learning the basics – and that’s what our “Muay Thai Technical Class / Beginners” is for. Here you will learn… well: The basics! How to move in Thaiboxing, how to stand right (your “stance”), how to do the various arm- und leg techniques and most importantly: How to defend yourself against them.
You should allow some time for this- Rome wasn’t built in a day and you won’t learn Muay Thai in one either.
The training is also open to more general level / intermediate fighters or trainees, it’s always a good idea to “go back to the basics”.
This is a fun class, it teaches you faster reaction, coordination, stamina, power, springiness and also boosts your self confidence. We train barefoot and if necessary wearing guards. For the start you won’t need to have your own equipment, but it makes sense to buy shin guards, gloves etc. if you intend to stay on.

Muay Thai Basics / Muay Thai Pads All levels
This class is open to all women and transgender, no matter what level you are at. General / intermediate trainees are also welcome.
This course is about the basics of Thaiboxing: Warming up and jumping rope, shadow boxing and practising the movements. After that there is a technical part where we train with punching / heavy bags as well as with pad-and-partner.
In this class there is enough time to improve your technique as well as to get a good workout. The class is complemented by power exercises and stretching.

Muay Thai Technical Class General / Intermediate
This class is for people who know how to block and defend themselves against kicks and blows and are confident in attacking techniques. If you’re not sure if you’re ready for general level, please address us coaches.
Please bring your own guards, hand wraps and gum shields.
The unit is between 90 and 120 mins long to have enough time to get in-depth with the techniques and tactics of Muay Thai. Instructed sparring is part of each class.
After the warm-up (for which we often use weights, ropes etc.), we loosen up and stretch, and then do some power training and shadow boxing. The main part of the course is dedicated to attacking, blocking and countering exercises, exercises with a partner, training with bags and pad work. Combinations, getting to know the different fighting distances, rhythm, basic tactics for sparring as well as light sparring itself and conditioning units are also part of this class.
We place great emphasis on the fact that everyone can train according to their own abilities, albeit it’s a general level / intermediate course. This means you can also take part if your body is temporarily or otherwise impaired, you happen not to be concentrated enough today or you just want to take part very low-level. Of course you can also be committed workout hard! It is very important to us that we pay attention to our partners, but everyone gets their do.

Back and Core Training
The Back and Core / Fitness Training is a fitness class which you can attend as a single class just to get in shape, or as an additional class to supplement your other classes at Sidekick. It is designed for people without or with only very slight back problems.
The class is made up of power, balance and coordination exercises combined with body perception elements as well as stretching and relaxation units.
We will be strengthening the core (front and back), which is needed to avoid or get rid of bad posture and backaches. We will be working on your balance to strengthen the deep muscle tissue that holds up the spine and joints and keeps your intervertebral discs in place.
Extensive stretching units serve to improve your flexibility, which makes it an ideal
additional class to your Muay Thai Technical. Besides this it is also important to relax tensed muscles. As backaches and tensed muscles can also be the result of mental troubles (i.e. stress), stretching and relaxation plays an important part in our Back and Core Fitness Training class.
To conclude the class there will be light massages (your own body or a partner’s) with Thai massage elements, breathing exercises and stretching. This is to enhance a positive feeling towards your body, relax your muscles and get a break from everyday routine.

We are sorry to say our gym is not accessible for wheelchairs. You have to enter via the stairs, there is no lift.

Guests
We do not accept nazis and racists.
Cis° men are also not allowed to take part in the classes and are not admitted entrance during class.

Fees
We have regular fees. If you are not able to pay the full amount, please address us for a reduction. You do not have to disclose your reasons, we trust in your solidarity and truthfulness. All trainees with refugee-status may train free of cost.

Languages
The spoken language in the courses is German. We are happy to translate the most important parts into English. We ask all trainees (if possible) to help translate (as quietly as possible). Please address us if you are having difficulties understanding.

Changing rooms
There are two large changing rooms.

Children
We do not offer childcare during classes, but members are welcome to team up and organise shared childcare themselves.

Safe space
We want to create a space in which all present can be relaxed and happy and treat each other accordingly. And of course it is everybody’s responsibility to make this happen…we can only create this space together!
If you encounter discrimination of any kind at Sidekick, please talk to your fellow members or us coaches, or entrust another person with the task of doing so for you. We are sure to find a solution. Please bear in mind that we are all different and have had different experiences in life. Some of us may always have had the same (bad) encounters, others may not have had as much experience with diversity and how to handle negative encounters as you have. Live in solidarity with each other!

All classes take place at the “Boxclub Olympia Leipzig 05” in the “Westwerk”. The “Westwerk” is located at: Karl-Heine-Str. 93, 04229 Leipzig
The next tram station is Tram 14 – Karl-Heine-Straße / Merseburger Straße.
There is no club specific parking.

Emergency exits
In case of a panic, the room can be left easily.

Smoking
Smoking is not permitted in the gym.
